On Writing

I write all of it by hand, on pen and paper, in notebooks. I always write in public. I can’t write at home.

The Next Book?

Everyone is asking me what I am writing now.  I am writing the book that my character Scott was writing in my first book. If that makes any sense.

On Bullying

If anyone has a personal story about bullying that they would like to share, I’d love to hear it.  Here’s mine:

I was bullied when I was in seventh grade, the only year I ever attended public school.  I now know that seventh grade seems to be the apex of bullying.  I did not know the boy and I have no idea why he chose me to pick on except that maybe I was always one of the smallest kids in class.  He was much bigger than me and physically intimidating but he never really pushed me around, just threatened me and made fun of me.  I remember that the worst part was that my real friends, or those I thought of as friends, never came to my defense.  They just stood and watched which was really the most painful part of it.

One day I was at the Belmont High School hockey rink watching a game and he showed up.  He started taunting me and I really tried to ignore him.  Again, some kids I knew just watched quietly, maybe nervously, but said nothing.  Finally I had had it.  I remembered from karate lessons in grammar school that the bigger someone is, the easier it is to knock them off balance.  I got a running start and threw my body into him as hard as I possibly could.  He was standing about one foot in front of a huge steel beam that held up the roof of the rink.  I knocked him back and his skull pounded into it.  When I stepped away and looked up (yes he was that much bigger than me) I saw that he was in a total daze.  When I think back now I believe that I actually gave him a concussion.  I ran from there and sat with my dad who was also at the game.  My friends later told me that they could not believe how hard I hit him and when his head hit the post the sound reverberated throughout the entire rink, echoing loudly.

I don’t even remember his name.  He was mean to me, though, and as much as I don’t recommend losing control I have to say that he never came near me again.  While writing the book I often wondered whatever became of him.  In my research I discovered that bullies actually have a higher rate of suicide themselves and also a higher rate of drug and alcohol abuse and incarceration.  If only we could help them learn the social skills of empathy and delayed gratification then maybe we could save them from a life that is destined for misery.

Awesome Reviews

Mr. McAdoo’s debut novel, Filled With Nothing is nothing short of extraordinary. The book is a unique take on the subject matter told from a wrenching and personal perspective of the protagonist, Scott Walsh, with a cast of vivid characters who provide contrast and complement him. As someone who professionally deals with the scandal of bullying I appreciated the way the story was presented and how the characters reacted to their situation.

On Paper

As I work on the paper version of the book I can’t help but think how cool it would be to write real letters to readers, instead of emails.  On really good stationery.

First Amazon Review Is Five Stars!

My very first Amazon review was posted today and it’s five stars!!

“Filled With Nothing is a page turner from beginning to end. The characters are colorful, sympathetic and well developed. It’s hard to believe this is the writer’s first novel – I can’t wait to see more from Wm. Andrew McAdoo!”
