Beyond Bullying: Assault At School

Click this link to view video:  Student Attacked At School

In this video we see a student alleged to be attacking another student as he walks down the hall minding his own business.  His friend records the attack on his phone and posts it on the internet. I feel really bad for everyone involved. The victim had to be hospitalized and sustained damage to his retina, an injury that could plague him for the rest of his life. Believe me, I personally know how painful eye surgery can be. For the student who made this shameless attack: what were you thinking? That one stupid moment of yours now has you charged with felony assault. You will probably spend time behind bars. Weren’t you brilliant capturing this on video to prove to the courts beyond any reasonable doubt that it was you? Did you think about how many years you’d spend regretting that moment? As for the “friend” who will now have an arrest record as an accomplice in this obviously premeditated act: I bet you are really glad you are his friend? He did SO much for you, didn’t he? He is such a great friend that he might even send you to jail, too. At least you’ll both have a lifelong criminal record to look forward to. We need to talk to all young people and not let them throw their lives and futures away because of one amazingly stupid minute.

On Writing

I don’t write the stories.  God writes the stories.  I just take the dictation.

This week brought the tragic news of Jack Reese of Ogden, Utah.  After allegedly being bullied repeatedly at school this teen, who appeared to be loving, kind and talented, chose to end his own life. Read more here:  Jack Reese

How did you structure it?

The biggest challenge was to walk that fine line between poignant and sappy, or maudlin. I feared it would sound like a bad Hallmark TV movie script. I found that the way you do it is by taking those very sad, tragic, unspeakable moments and then make them beautiful. Just make them quiet ideas and let the reader think.
